Hey Everybody!
I know you all know how much of a Health awareness buff I am…I just like to get everyone educated on the fact that there is more than just HIV/AIDs and other popular STIs (no longer called STDs) out there…with that said, here is some information about lupus passed along by a good blogger friend of mine Ms. Crystal Williams of The Breezy Effect (www.thebreezyeffect.com)- Check it out!
Ms. Crys Breezy of www.thebreezyeffect.com
History of Lupus:
Lupus is an autoimmune disease that affects the joints and almost every major organ in the body, including: the brain, heart, kidneys, etc. In this disease, the immune system attacks the body’s own tissues and organs. Lupus is believed to come from genetic factors but can be onset by: infection, sunlight, or stress. A staggering estimate of 1.4 million people in the United States, are said to have Lupus. The majority of this number is women, minority women being more subject to the disease than anyone else, with African American women being the most at risk. While there is treatment for Lupus, there is no definitive cure as of yet. This is just a tidbit of info, for those of us who are not quite familiar with what exactly Lupus is.

Shanelle Gabriel is a HBO Def Poet and Vocalist and was diagnosed with SLE Lupus in 2004. Shanelle Gabriel will be walking with a team (Creative Movement) this Saturday, October 11, 2008. She will be walking in an event sponsored by the Alliance For Lupus Research organization. The walk will take place in New York City and will start promptly at 10am. The walk will start from South Street Seaport and is a 5K walk, which is about 3.1 miles. Donations, gifts, and sponsorships are currently being accepted. All of the proceeds will go to help aiding in finding a cure for Lupus. The goal set by the organization is $800,000 and according to the organization’s website, they are about half way there, with a little over $400, 000 received so far. If you are interested in helping them acheive their goal, links will follow the post.
